Hello, I am the founder of MindforYou. My Mum was diagnosed with vascular dementia and Alzheimers in 2007.  As a family, we spent lots of time together, with Mum and Dad spending as much time as they could with their grandchildren, Emma and Ben, and a diagnosis of dementia wasn’t going to change this. At the start, regular visits from Scotland to our home in Leicestershire gave Dad a well earned break and Mum a change of scene. Traditional respite did not suit my parents, and visits to Leicestershire became a thing of the past, so we rented cottages in Northumberland. This is when I had the idea for MindforYou, and I started to change my focus from a Pharmaceutical Scientist to supporting families living with dementia.

In September 2014 MindforYou became a Limited Company, operating as a social business. Carers told me they needed ultimate trust in us. So, we personally visit all our guests. I believe it’s this that allows our guests to truly relax, knowing our staff will provide tailored support, personalised to them. All our staff have professional or personal experience supporting families living with dementia. Val, Mum’s befriender of 7 years, was the first MindforYou employee. Then sons and daughters of staff, including my daughter Emma, and friends got involved. Now a lot of our holidays have a younger member of staff, making us one big, happy, caring, extended family for our guests. My biggest surprise is

My Mum is still alive, but sadly, like many carers of people living with dementia, my Dad passed away after focusing too much on Mum and not taking enough care of himself. My biggest regret is I didn’t establish MindforYou in time to make a difference to my Mum, my Dad my own family. However, it is clear on a MindforYou holiday, browsing our photos or reading thankyou cards that we are making a real difference to families living with dementia.  We wish everyone the best on your journey with dementia, as it is not always the easiest, and we do hope to meet and get to know you on one of our MindforYou holidays soon.
